Onions, one of the oldest cultivated plants, are low in calories and high in water. Moreover, the popular vegetable is rich in healthy vitamins and nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin B, potassium and selenium. But how does regular consumption of onions affect our bodies?

1. Your digestion is stimulated


Regular consumption of onions is especially beneficial for people prone to constipation or sluggish bowels. Because it is rich in fiber, which swells in the intestines and thus stimulates digestion. The fructans it contains make bowel movements easier and also enhance the absorption of calcium and other minerals. However, the substance can also cause flatulence in a sensitive digestive system – if this applies to you, you should eat raw onions only in small quantities or boil onions briefly before consumption.






2. Onions strengthen the immune system


Onions are rich in antioxidants that trap free radicals in the body and thus support the immune system. Vegetables contain about 25 different antioxidants and flavonoids, which among other things can reduce cell damage. Apart from that, onions are also known for their anti-inflammatory effects - the sulfur compounds they contain have an antibacterial effect, which is why the vegetable is also used as a home remedy for earaches or coughs.


3. The risk of developing various diseases can decrease


Regular consumption of onions should prevent the development of various diseases. Red onions, in particular, contain anthocyanins, which are dark coloring agents whose consumption studies have shown can prevent the development of diabetes, among other things. In addition, the secondary plant substance quercetin found in onions is said to attack cancer cells. According to various studies, onions and garlic are said to be able to prevent cancer. Onions also thin the blood, and the sulfur compounds they contain have a positive effect on cholesterol levels - two factors that reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
