 Allergies: Take preventive measures

Among other things, genetic arrangement plays a role in the development of allergies. However, experts today assume that preventive measures can be taken - especially for children with a genetic predisposition. In any case, talk to a doctor if you are at risk of developing an allergy. If you are pregnant and have a family allergy, you should inform your gynecologist.

Maternal and child nutrition

In general, there is no generally accepted diet to prevent allergies. Instead, a healthy, balanced diet starting before pregnancy is ideal. Breastfeeding is also a key factor in prevention.

Breastfeeding and complementary foods

Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended during the first months of life. Complementary foods should be introduced slowly between the beginning of the fifth month of life (17th week) and the end of the sixth month (26th week). To date, there is no reliable evidence that delaying “feeding” has a protective effect on the development of allergies. Babies who are not breastfed but are at risk of developing allergies are given a special allergy food, called HA food.

Allergic foods

Avoiding so-called allergenic foods (such as nuts, eggs, fish, etc.) in complementary foods is not necessary. Healthy pregnant and breastfeeding women don't have to give up potential allergenic foods, either.

Cigarettes and tobacco

The risk of developing allergies and, to a greater extent, the risk of developing asthma is increased through smoking and through passive smoking. Especially during pregnancy, tobacco consumption should be avoided! Also avoid smoking around children. These should not be in smoke rooms.

Save pets

It is not recommended to purchase a fur animal, it is reasonable to keep a fur animal that already exists at the time of birth.

cleanliness

Excessive cleanliness is not necessary, not even to completely keep children away from the forest and meadows, from animals and from other children. On the contrary, there are indications that early “stimulation” of the immune system has a positive effect and can provide protection (eg, being raised on a farm, or foster care in the first two years of life).
